Timeline

Week of February 1st

Mentor Team Assignments Begin --- Presenting technologies will begin to be matched with a Mentor team comprised of financial, legal and marketing professionals experienced in reviewing presentations targeted to investment professionals. Most team members will be participating telephonically.

*NOTE: Mentors will not be assigned until one individual from the company has registered to attend.

Week of February 8

Presenter/Mentor Team Conference Calls Begin --- Presenting companies and Mentor team members will meet for the first time. An initial draft and delivery of the 6-minute presentation (with or without slides) is highly recommended at the first meeting to provide an initial starting point. Teams should meet at least once weekly, allocating at least 1 hour per meeting. Please be sure to email draft presentations to Mentor team members before each conference call.

It is absolutely CRITICAL you establish your initial Mentor team meeting and establish a weekly conference call schedule. Failure to establish an initial mentor meeting in a timely manner may result in forfeiture of your opportunity to present. If you are having difficulty making contact with any of your Mentors please notify me immediately.

February 8 through March 5

Weekly Presenter/Mentor Team Meetings Continue --- Coaches (mentors) and presenting exhibitors will be expected to meet again once or twice weekly in preparing and refining a concise, 6-minute investor-oriented power point presentation. Plan to meet at a MINIMUM of 6 to 8 times.

Week of March 1

Dress Rehearsals of Draft Presentations --- Presenting Exhibitors will make their initial PowerPoint presentations via scheduled conference calls. You will be notified which day and time you are scheduled to present. Your DRAFT PowerPoint presentation will be forwarded to a new team of 3-4 professionals who will provide you with a fresh look and candid feedback of your final draft.

Sunday, March 14 --- FINAL PRESENTATION DEADLINE FOR ALL PRESENTERS

*NOTE: Final presentations are due by 5 PM ET on Sunday, March 14. If you do not provide your final presentation on or before the deadline we cannot guarantee that your presentation will be available on-site. Please bring hard copies of each slide (on a separate page) together with at least one backup of the entire presentation on a USB Flash Drive with you to the conference. This will serve as backup only. You will not have time at the Convention Center just before your scheduled presentation time to load the PPT.

Wednesday and Thursday, March 16-17, WBTshowcase 2010

Presentation Outline

Your Six-minute slide presentation should contain, no more than 8 slides, and should address many of the following issues:

30 Seconds

I. INTRODUCTION OF TECHNOLOGY/ORGANIZATION
  • Elevator Pitch – Tell the listener why they should care about what you are about to say. You have 30 seconds to gain or lose their interest. Preview the rest of your speech and get them excited about listening to what is coming next. Be sure to provide a brief background on your company, your technology and your core team (please note that these are all covered in more detail later).

3 minutes

II. DEFINE YOUR MARKET OPPORTUNITY OR MARKET PROBLEM AND DESCRIBE YOUR SOLUTION
  • Define the need with the marketplace for your company’s technology.
  • What is the problem or opportunity with the market?
  • Why is it a problem or opportunity?
  • For whom is it a problem (target market)?
  • What specific features and benefits does your solution offer?
  • What is the size of the market you are entering? What are the growth patterns of this market?
  • What solutions are currently available in the market? Why have these solutions failed?
  • Describe your business model. Are you or do you intend to be operating company or do you intend to license your technology?
  • Describe your revenue model. If you intend to license then that is your revenue model.

30 Seconds

III. MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION
  • Names and positions of key management, with description of their strengths and functional expertise.
  • Positions and requirements of management to be added.

30 Seconds

IV. Marketing & Sales Strategy
  • An overview of your planned sales, distribution, marketing and promotional strategies.
  • If you intend to license your technology to another entity then marketing and sales strategy does not need to be addressed.

1 minute

V. FINANCIAL INFORMATION
  • Sales revenue and income projections (if applicable).
  • Financing being sought and usage of funds (if applicable).
  • Licensing strategy sought (if applicable)

30 Seconds

VI. THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE INVESTOR or LICENSEE
  • Recap with emphasis on “what’s in it” for the investor.
  • Exit strategies (i.e. acquisition candidate, public offering). Demonstrate you’ve given this some thought.

Please Note: Six minutes is a perfect period of time to make a powerful first impression. These topics are merely suggested areas of focus for your presentation. If a topic above does not apply to your business or you feel there are more important issues for your business, please do not feel obligated to include topics from above.

PowerPoint Slide Pointers

Points to remember:

Use 8 slides or less (Averaging less than 1 minute per slide is excellent)

Each slide should:

  • be used only to support your verbal remarks. Use the slides as your talking points,
  • have not more than 4-6 bullets,
  • have fonts that are large enough to be seen at a distance,
  • use a font color that stands out from the background color to increase readability,
  • have as few words as possible on each slide. You do not need full sentences on a slide,
  • use graphs, charts and photos or illustrations when appropriate (be selective), and
  • should be easily printable on a black and white laser printer.

Slides should not:
  • detract audience attention from you,
  • use fancy or elaborate designs or distracting special effects in your slides,
  • use industry jargon or acronyms,
  • use all upper case letters,
  • include video/motion pictures.
Presentation Pointers
  • Put energy and passion into the presentation – have fun.
  • Identify and emphasize the three or four most important issues that will be of most interest to your audience.
  • When describing the market opportunity, be as quantifiable as possible, listing credible sources. Investors and licensees are less interested in your opinion.
  • When describing your business, product or service, be brief, focused, and organized.
  • When describing your technology, use word, terms and phrases that can be easily understood by people who know nothing about your technology, business or industry.
  • Throughout your speech, be as specific as possible. Do not talk in generalities.
  • Be sure to conclude your speech with a call to action. Tell them how they can contact you (“we are in booth #33”), where they can get more information, etc.

Top Ten Lies of Entrepreneurs (i.e. things not to say)

Whether you are a scientist, researcher, or seasoned entrepreneur, I hope this attached list of top 10 lies of entrepreneurs prevents you from making any common mistakes in dealing with prospective investors or licensees. This is not a comprehensive list, but I think the author, Guy Kawasaki hits on some of the most common I have also heard as venture investor over the years. Some are not as apparent as you might think.

Pre-WBT Networking and Targeted Investor and/or Licensee Invitations

WBT Pre-Event Networking
Receive full access to registered attendees weeks in advance. Connect with attendees before the event via email and make appointments to meet on-site in the VIP Pre-WBT Networking Areas.

Special Invitation to your VIP Guests
Each year the WBT attracts over 120 bonafide seed and early stage venture investors and Fortune 500 licensing professionals, as well as sponsors from all over the country and around the world. As we reach out to these communities, we invite you to get involved by telling us who you would meet at the Showcase. We will then, on a best efforts basis, reach out personally to those contacts you provide and offer them the opportunity to attend the WBT and in doing so, meet some of our sponsors.

Please limit your suggested contacts to no more than 10 and be sure to use the Excel table below. Utilizing the table allows us to aggregate all of the recommended attendees in an efficient manner. Please note you need not have all the contact information for companies you have interest. Instead, simply list the name of the organization and/or division and we'll take it from there. In most cases, we already have a few professionals in our database we can contact.
