Technologies from Ohio, Wisconsin and Singapore Win Global Showcase

Tuesday, March 31, 2009 | Arlington, TX – A unique nanotech application acquired from the U.S. Air Force took the platinum prize at last week’s 2009 WBTshowcase (WBT09), the nation’s premier annual global investment and licensing forum for emerging technologies.

The technology, owned by Alexium Ltd. with U.S. headquarters in Dayton, Ohio, was declared 2009’s “World’s Best Technology” from among the more than 90 presenters at the highly-selective two-day showcase. Competing technologies represented 27 states and 11 foreign countries.

Alexium wowed WBTshowcase judges with a potentially disruptive method of rapidly attaching nano-particles and multiple functional groups to surfaces.

According to Stefan Susta, U.S. Operations Manager, Alexium’s technology can create, for example, military fabrics that are self-extinguishing in fire, anti-microbial, oil-resistant, super waterproof and chemical agent-reactive. Alexium is also pursuing commercial spin-off applications for the paint, filtration, wound care, building materials and technical fiber markets.

“There were so many exciting technologies at the WBTshowcase, this award caught us by surprise,” said Mr. Susta. “We see it as a nice boost to create additional joint venture opportunities.”

Taking the event’s gold and silver prizes were, respectively, Wisconsin-based Invivosciences’ engineered tissue-based proprietary assays and Nanyang Technological University’s high-efficiency compressor technology that provides breakthrough levels of heating, refrigeration and air-conditioning energy savings in a compressor market that reached $21.1 billion worldwide in 2007.

“As a startup company looking toward the next stage of commercialization, this award should be critical,” said Ayla Annac, Invivosciences CEO and co-founder. “Its the outside acknowledgement we need to create a market for investors.”

Nearly 500 entrepreneurs, technology transfer officers, investors and Fortune 1000 licensees attended WBT09.

“The commercialization of innovative technologies like those at the WBTshowcase is a key driver of economic growth,” said WBTshowcase CEO Paul Huleatt. “We look forward to watching the progress of our 2009 presenters.”

WBTshowcase

First held in 2002, the WBTshowcase is the world’s premier annual event exposing undiscovered breakthrough energy, life science, IT, and physical science technologies emerging from top universities, labs and research institutions. Each WBT is a year-long collaborative effort resulting in deals vetted and mentored by investors and licensees for investors and licensees. www.wbtshowcase.com
