SPACEHAB’s Thomas B. Pickens III to speak at the 2009 WBTshowcase
November 12, 2008 | Arlington, TX – Thomas B. Pickens III is leading the world’s first commercially-sponsored vaccine development program in space. As CEO of SPACEHAB, Pickens is leveraging his company’s 23 years experience transporting science and cargo via space shuttles to develop pharmaceutical products in the unique environment of microgravity.
“NASA has spent about $5.5 billion experimenting in microgravity and we found various high value discoveries that we have already begun to commercialize” said Pickens, who is particularly enthusiastic about SPACEHAB’s proprietary Microgravity Processing Platform, which grows bacteria in space to identify valuable bio-markers that can greatly enhance drug development.
Pickens, who is an experienced and successful serial entrepreneur, will be a featured speaker at the 2009 WBTshowcase (WBT09), the prestigious global investment and licensing forum held from March 24-25 in Arlington-DFW, Texas.
Pickens plans to make the most of his WBT09 attendance. While prospecting among the event’s rigorously screened presenting technologies, Pickens is also interested in the Fortune 1000 licensing scouts and venture capitalists that the WBTshowcase draws annually.
“We’re an incubator that commercializes overlooked IP from the space industry – NASA, JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), Oakridge Labs, the VA Hospital and Duke University, for example,” said Pickens. “Then we attract the appropriate partners such as big pharma, industry and venture capitalists to help us bring these discoveries to market.”
Pickens joins a long list of distinguished speakers on Day One of WBT09. Day Two will feature up to 100 presenting companies and research institutions representing energy, life science, information technology and physical science sectors.
